IKEA PAX Installation in Rockville, MD & Silver Spring
PAX wardrobes assembled, leveled, anchored to framing and trimmed with fillers so they read as built-in — across Rockville, Potomac, Bethesda & Silver Spring.

A PAX wardrobe is excellent value and a genuinely long afternoon — longer if the floor is not level, which in most DMV houses it is not. NextDayJose assembles and installs IKEA PAX and similar wardrobe systems across Rockville, Silver Spring, Potomac and Bethesda, including the parts most people skip: proper wall anchoring, leveling before the doors go on, and filler panels that close the gaps. Locally-owned, licensed and insured, 13+ years in the DMV.
The difference between a PAX that looks like furniture and one that looks like cabinetry is entirely in the fitting. Multiple units aligned as one run, scribed to the wall, trimmed at the ceiling and the ends, and anchored properly. That last part is not optional — a tall wardrobe is a tip-over hazard and the anchoring hardware in the box assumes a stud that is exactly where you need it. If you would rather have a system built to the space instead, that is closet system installation.
PAX & Wardrobe Work We Do
- Full PAX frame assembly, single or multiple units
- Leveling on uneven floors before doors are hung
- Anchoring into studs, plaster or masonry
- Multi-unit runs aligned as one continuous wardrobe
- Filler panels and scribing to out-of-plumb walls
- Crown, base and side trim for a built-in look
- Sliding and hinged door installation and alignment
- Interior fittings: drawers, rails, shelves and lighting
Why PAX Installation Is Harder Than the Instructions Suggest
The instructions assume a level floor, a plumb wall and a stud where you need one. In a 1960s Rockville split-level or a Takoma Park bungalow, you get none of those. A PAX frame that is out of level by a quarter inch across its width will show it in the door reveals immediately — sliding doors in particular are unforgiving, and they are the reason most self-installed PAX runs have uneven gaps at the top.
So we level the frames first, shim the bases, and only then hang doors and set interior fittings. On a multi-unit run we clamp and fasten the frames to each other before anchoring so the whole thing behaves as one piece. It is not complicated work, but the order matters and it is very hard to correct after the doors are on.
Anchoring: The Part That Is Not Optional
Tall wardrobes tip. That is why the hardware is in the box and why the instructions are emphatic about it, and it is the single most commonly skipped step in a DIY install. The complication is that the anchor point on the frame rarely lines up with a stud, so the supplied screw goes into drywall and does approximately nothing.
We locate framing and anchor to it, adding a cleat or blocking across the back where the studs do not fall usefully. In older DMV homes with lath-and-plaster walls we use anchors rated for plaster, and on masonry we drill and set proper anchors. If you have small children in the house, this is the part of the job worth paying someone for on its own — it is the same logic behind the rest of our childproofing work.
Making PAX Look Built-In
The upgrade most people want and do not know how to ask for: closing the gaps. A PAX run set against a wall leaves a gap at the top to the ceiling, a gap at the wall if it is not plumb, and an exposed side panel at the open end. Adding a trim panel at the ceiling, scribing a filler strip down the wall side, and finishing the exposed end with a panel and base trim to match the room turns three boxes into what looks like a fitted wardrobe.
It typically adds a few hundred dollars and it is the difference people notice. Where the run meets existing trim we match the profile to the room rather than the wardrobe, which is what makes the illusion work — the same approach we use fitting built-in bookcases into an alcove.

Wardrobes in DMV Homes
The reason PAX is so popular around Rockville, Silver Spring, Bethesda and DC is that the housing stock is short on closet space. A 1950s colonial bedroom often has a single 24-inch-deep reach-in, and rowhouses in Petworth, Shaw and Capitol Hill frequently have none at all in at least one bedroom. A PAX run along one wall is genuinely the most cost-effective answer to that, which is why we install so many.
The local complication is floors and walls. Plaster over rough-sawn framing in older Takoma Park, Kensington and DC houses means studs are not on a predictable 16-inch layout and the walls are not flat, so anchoring takes locating rather than guessing and the wall side almost always needs scribing. Floors in these houses have settled too — we routinely shim a quarter to half an inch across a nine-foot run, and that shimming is exactly what keeps the door reveals even.
PAX Installation FAQs — Rockville, Potomac & Silver Spring
How much does IKEA PAX installation cost in Rockville?
A single frame assembled, leveled and anchored typically runs $250 to $450, with additional frames in the same run at $180 to $350 each. Doors, interior fittings and trim are priced on top — a three-frame run with sliding doors and full built-in trim usually lands between $1,200 and $2,200. Quotes are always free.
Do PAX wardrobes have to be anchored to the wall?
Yes. Tall wardrobes tip, which is why the anchoring hardware is in the box. The practical problem is that the anchor point rarely lines up with a stud, so the supplied screw ends up in drywall and provides very little. We locate framing and anchor to it, adding blocking or a cleat where the studs do not fall usefully. With children in the house this is the most important part of the job.
Can you make a PAX wardrobe look built-in?
Yes, and it is our most-requested upgrade. We close the gap to the ceiling with a trim panel, scribe a filler strip down the wall side, and finish the exposed end with a panel and base trim matched to the room's existing profile. It typically adds $350 to $900 and it is what turns a row of boxes into what looks like fitted cabinetry.
How long does it take to install a PAX wardrobe?
A single frame with doors is usually half a day. A three-frame run with sliding doors, interior fittings and trim work is typically a full day, sometimes two if we are painting the trim. Uneven floors add time because everything gets shimmed and checked before the doors go on.
Can you install PAX on a plaster or masonry wall?
Yes. Older Takoma Park, Kensington and DC rowhouse walls are usually lath-and-plaster, where we use anchors rated for plaster and locate the actual framing rather than assuming a 16-inch layout. On masonry we hammer-drill and set proper anchors. Both are routine — they just take longer than a drywall install, which we account for in the quote.
