Ceramic Tile Installation in Rockville, Silver Spring & the DMV
Ceramic and porcelain tile floors set flat, crack-free and properly grouted across Rockville, Potomac & Bethesda.

NextDayJose installs ceramic and porcelain tile floors across Rockville, Silver Spring, Potomac and Bethesda โ bathroom floors, kitchens, laundry rooms, mudrooms and entries, and basements. We handle the whole job: tearing out the old floor, preparing the subfloor, setting the tile, grouting and sealing, and putting the baseboard and toilet back. Locally-owned, licensed and insured, 13+ years in DMV homes.
Tile almost never fails because of the tile. Cracked tiles and popped grout come from a subfloor that flexes or isn't flat, and from tile set without full mortar coverage. Most of our time on a tile job goes into what you'll never see โ and that's why our floors stay flat and quiet for decades.

How We Install a Tile Floor
We pull the old floor down to the subfloor, fix any soft or squeaky spots, and check flatness with a long straightedge. Over wood framing we screw down cement backer board or an uncoupling membrane such as Schluter DITRA; over concrete we grind high spots and fill low ones with self-leveler. Tile is set in thinset with a notched trowel sized to the tile and back-buttered, so there are no hollow spots, and large-format tile goes down with a leveling system to keep edges flush. After grouting we seal, reinstall the baseboard, and set clean transitions to the neighboring rooms.
Ceramic vs. Porcelain Tile
Both are fired clay; porcelain is denser and absorbs less than 0.5% water, so it holds up better in basements, entries and anywhere that freezes. Ceramic is easier to cut, often cheaper, and perfectly good for a bathroom or kitchen floor. We'll tell you which fits the room โ and if the walls need work too, we handle backsplash tile and grout and caulk refreshes.
Tile Floors in DMV Homes
Two things shape tile jobs around Rockville, Bethesda and Silver Spring. Older homes โ 1950s ramblers and Cape Cods, DC rowhouses โ often have 2x8 joists or plank subfloors with more bounce than tile tolerates, so we check deflection before we quote and add plywood or blocking where it's needed. And basements here sit on slabs that move with Montgomery County's clay and freeze-thaw cycles, which is why we use an uncoupling membrane and leave proper movement joints at the perimeter instead of grouting tight to the wall.
If you're selling, a cracked tile floor is a common home inspection repair โ we can usually replace a few tiles from attic stock rather than redoing the room.

Ceramic Tile FAQs โ Rockville, Potomac & Silver Spring
How much does ceramic tile installation cost in Rockville?
Labor for a standard ceramic tile floor runs about $8 to $14 per square foot, and $10 to $18 for porcelain or large-format tile. Tear-out, backer board and subfloor repair are added on top. A small bathroom floor typically lands between $900 and $1,800 installed. Quotes are always free.
Can you install tile over an existing floor?
Sometimes. Tile can go over sound, well-bonded existing tile or a flat concrete slab, but never over vinyl with a cushioned back, laminate, carpet or a floor that flexes. Adding height also affects doors, dishwashers and transitions, so in most rooms we recommend tearing out to the subfloor.
How long does a tile floor take?
A bathroom floor is usually 2 to 3 days: tear-out and prep, setting, then grouting once the thinset has cured. A kitchen or basement typically takes 3 to 5 days. You can walk on the tile after about 24 hours and it is fully cured in a few days.
Why do tile floors crack?
Almost always because the subfloor flexes or moves. Joists that are undersized, a thin or loose subfloor, hollow spots under the tile, or a slab crack that telegraphs up are the usual causes. We fix the structure and use an uncoupling membrane where movement is likely, which is what prevents the next crack.
